PhD (f/m/d) in Electrochemistry / Automation

05.01.2025, Wissenschaftliches Personal

The group “sustainable energy materials” offers a position to pursue a PhD (f/m/d) in Electrochemistry / Automation

About us:

Our group “Sustainable Energy Materials” concentrates on the understanding of structure-performance indicators in electrocatalytic reactions. Our catalysts are the heart of sustainable energy conversion processes such as in hydrogen fuel cells or electrolyzers. Utilizing innovative, automated characterization techniques we evaluate the catalyst’s performance. This enables the examination of numerous materials in a short time and thus accelerates the discovery of new materials. The corresponding reaction mechanisms that are essential for understanding the underlying processes are examined. We work closely with various institutions and companies from all over the world, especially the USA, the UK, and Germany.

Your Profile:

  • Excellent university degree in engineering, chemistry, materials science, physics, electrochemistry or a similar discipline
  • Strong interest in automation of process steps (Python, LabView, or similar...
  • Experience in one (or more) of the following areas is desirable: programming, automation, synthesis of inorganic materials, materials characterization, electrochemistry, catalyst preparation
  • Strong motivation to complete the PhD within 3 years
  • Very good organizational skills
  • Willingness to show initiative and the ability to work independently
  • Excellent cooperation and communication skills and the ability to work in a team
  • Very good oral and written English skills
  • Hands-on mentality

Applicants should submit their CV including A-level, bachelor and master degrees, and a motivation letter detailing their interest and suitability for the position.

Your tasks:

The successful candidate will join the department “Novel Catalyst Design”, led by Prof. Ledendecker at the HI-ERN in Erlangen. The department specializes in the development of metal-based inorganic catalysts aimed at advancing the global energy transition. Our research focuses on using various nanoparticles to create highly active supported catalysts.
This PhD project will specifically center on automating the synthesis processes for catalysts such as platinum-based and iridium oxide-based materials, designed for acidic water-splitting reactions in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) units (e.g., https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/aenm.202301450).

Your tasks in detail:
  • Collaborate closely with the electronics and mechanical workshops to automate process steps.
  • Develop and implement a laser and electrochemical setup for the automated preparation and electrochemical screening of electrocatalysts.
  • Perform detailed analysis and enable automated evaluation of measurement results.
  • Fabricate inorganic nanostructured catalysts based on iridium and platinum in close collaboration with chemists.
  • Prepare detailed presentations and comprehensive project reports.
  • Present research findings at conferences and publish results in scientific journals
IMPORTANT: Your primary station will be the "Helmholtz-Institut Erlangen-Nürnberg für Erneuerbare Energien" (HI ERN) in Erlangen, under a contract with TUM.

We offer:

TUM offers a wide range of inspiring and challenging Ph.D. programs, which will supplement the research training with outstanding opportunities for career development, continued education, and life-long learning. We offer excellent working conditions in a young and interdisciplinary team. In an open environment, you will have the freedom to develop and realize your own ideas. The successful applicant will hold a 3-year contract. We offer a competitive salary and benefits depending on work experience and seniority in accordance with the public service wage agreement of the Free State of Bavaria - TV-L E13. As an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, TUM explicitly encourages applications from women and all others who would bring additional diversity dimensions to the university’s research and teaching strategies. Preference will be given to disabled candidates with essentially the same qualifications. Interested? We are looking forward to receiving your application via e-mail to applications.sem@cs.tum.de. The position will be open until an appropriate candidate is found.
